A Week Without

I have been thinking lately that, for purely experimental purposes, I should try various weeks without x. We only get about 3,900 weeks in our lives (if you lived to 75-years-old, that is) so why not spice a few of them up? I’m hoping that, although the theme of these weeks is deprivation, it will actually lead to new things – to more. Here are a few ideas for “weeks without” I’ve been wanting to try:

- a week without meat
- a week without driving
- a week without social media (might lose my mind; might have time to write a novel)
- a week without TV (will have to do this before Christmas movies start up)
- a week without processed foods (I’d probably starve)
- a week without complaining
- a week without texting
- a week without alcohol (I’ve done this one before though, of course)
- a week without going out (including unnecessary errands)
- a week without caffeine
- a week without spending money

I can also think of quite a few good inclusive-themed weeks, but I’m going to stick to this for now. Starting today, I will be having a meat-free week. This one should be one of the easiest, but it will be interesting to raise my awareness of the impact my carnivorous lifestyle has on me.

Falling Short

Here’s four fall fashion trends I will not be trying. These images are all from Urban Outfitters, but I’ve seen the styles everywhere.

1) Palazzo Pants
Okay, the maxi dress/skirt trend was great – I’m all for flowy. But these pants are ridiculous.

2) Long sweaters
Maybe it’s because I’m extraordinarily tall that I find these so offensive, but I just think they look like capes. Unless I get a Hogwarts letter, I’ll be staying away from this look.

3) Flared jeans
This style was cute when it made its first retro comeback – but I was in sixth grade. These pants just look silly. Let’s stick to skinny jeans and save the extra fabric for baby jeans (because, ugh, they’re so adorable).

4) Patterned denim
This is the only trend that I could possibly see myself falling for, but they will have to be a very tame version. Wearing curtain patterns on your pants was only okay in The Sound of Music.

The Head and the Heart

You know those bands that you just want to share with everyone? This is one of mine. I’ve been sharing my love for The Head and the Heart since hearing them open up for Yeasayer at SXSW last year (mind-blowing show all around, might I add). And can you believe it was at the IE9 launch party? It was so good that I almost thought I liked Internet Explorer. If that isn’t proof that this music is incredible, I don’t know what is.

The Head and the Heart’s album is upbeat, without being obnoxious, and folk-y, without being annoyingly so (lookin’ at you, Mumford and Sons). The songs are made up of reverent but youthful lyrics and are delivered by two distinctly different, talented male singers and one crooning, bombshell female, but they all come together to create remarkable harmonies, a la Crosby Stills and Nash.

After having conducted some scientific research, I can conclude that this band’s music is universally, objectively good (go ahead, prove me wrong). But listener beware: the songs will stick in your head in a way that only makes you feel as though you have to listen more. And on top of all of this, they even have a great logo. 10/10 in my book. Give it a listen on NPR.

Steve Jobs

The Macintosh personal computer has a special place in my heart. It’s part of many of my earliest memories. I can remember drawing for hours on the first black-and-white MacPaint, watching my dad work on its clicky keyboard into the wee hours of the night, and sitting around with my sister and dad playing early text-based adventure games. I also remember doing a middle-school report on the history of computers, researching Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. And I never could have survived my freshman year at UT without that trusty iPod and my 12″ Powerbook. Jobs’ retirement as CEO of Apple hits me extra hard as I look back on the great memories I have from using Apple products. There aren’t many minds like Jobs’, and it’s sad to see him step down. Here’s a great video of him introducing the Macintosh, which looks lovingly familiar to me, back in 1984. Have you ever seen someone look so proud?

PS: While I was searching to see if I could find the name of the games we used to play, I found out that you can play the classic text-based adventure game Dunnet on your current Mac by typing “emacs -batch -l dunnet” into the terminal. The rest of my night is now occupied.

Fall

Whenever summer starts dragging on for too long, as it always does in Arizona, I start dreaming of fall. I love fall weather in Arizona, where you can finally open your windows and let in some fresh air. And, being a huge fan of all holidays, I look forward to Halloween and Thanksgiving almost as much as Christmas (although, duh, not as much as Christmas). Stores are beginning to taunt us with fall attire and decor so I just had to gather a few images together while I turn my A/C on high and pretend I’ve fast-forwarded two months. Enjoy, fellow fall lovers.
