CHEERS to THAT! Personally, I find it very selfish when people choose “the high road” and decide they do not participate in Valentine’s Day because “it is stupid commercial holiday.” Since when is taking the opportunity to tell someone you care about them stupid?? Is there ever ANY harm in making someone feel special one day of the year?? Even if the holiday is over-commercialized, it shouldn’t mean that you refuse to swallow your pride and make someone you care about feel special on that day!

This attitude has almost made it unacceptable for a woman to want any sort of nice treatment on February 14th. If we wish to participate in the holiday, we get labeled as frivolous, dumb, spoiled, selfish…! We are expected to cheer on boyfriends as they condemn the holiday, when secretly, we are all wishing they’d make a romantic gesture! We always do! (Errr, at least I do!)

Anyway, thanks for writing this! I couldn’t agree with you more.

Hey Tiffany,
I’ve commented before but I’m intrigued by this post. Full disclosure: I’m religious. Don’t worry, no bible thumping coming from me. With Hitchens passing I’m just trying to learn as much as I can about his stance and that of “practicing” atheists, as it were. A couple there I have not seen, but three that I would add (though they are not actual Christmas films are Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Matilda… I can watch them over and over again!

Wonderful choices Tiffany. I also love Christmas Vacation – it is surely Chevy Chase’s best character.

Interesting that you choose the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol but good choice anyway. I’m a particular fan of Scrooged myself – I like the alternative nature of it, despite it returning to the schmaltz of so many Christmas films by its final reel.

Nice to see some love for Tim Allen in the hugely enjoyable The Santa Claus. Shame about the sequels though.
